Fairhills project

Since 2005 we work closely with the international Fairtrade organisation on the Fairhills project, one of the biggest undertaken by this UK based organisation worldwide.

A joint venture in South Africa between us and Origin Wine, the project aims at improving the quality of life of workers and their families on members’ farms. The project derives funding from various sources, most importantly its 25% ownership of the Fairhills brand. The income is managed by a committee on which worker representatives predominate.

Funds are used to finance a range of projects, such as crèches for pre-school children, school buses, the acquisition of computers, bursaries for tertiary education and adult literacy programmes. A craft cooperative for making candles, soaps and beaded articles also provides training while a community centre serves as the focal point for social activities and educational programmes. Plans are afoot to buy a farm that will produce grapes for delivery to the cellar and which will also operate a guest house.
